PostSubject: Favor of the odds   Favor of the odds EmptySat Nov 22, 2014 12:59 am

Chandler woke with stiffness in his bones, the chill of todays events having already set in for him. Today was district 12's reaping, and Chandlers name was in the bowl more than he would like to think. Plus Jordan had an equal stake in getting his name pulled.
Jordan.
Chandler pushed himself up, cursing everything as he pulled his best clothes on. It wasn't much but Chandler still looked presentable in his tattered dress pants and work shirt, handsome even.
It was still early, so he had time to stuff the last bit of wrapped leftovers into his pocket. He knew Jordan would appreciate the little treat today of all days.
It was cold when Chandler finally made it outside, his breath adding to the fog of the morning. With one last heavy look at his place, Chandler moved out, wondering if he would ever be back. The tread to Jordan's wasn't hard, it was a trip he made regularly, yet it still felt different when he moved to knock on the boys door.
"Oh shit..." the man breathed, his fist falling into a knock.

Jordan appeared at the door in seconds, giving Chandler a soft but loving smile. It appeared forced because the last thing he felt like doing today was smiling, but he put forth the effort to show Chandler he cared and was grateful for his company. He didn't say a word, instead taking Chandler's hand and stepping outside.
He took a deep breath of the cool morning air and attempted to calm himself. They had been fine for this long, only a few more years now. Staying calm was the key.

"Hey, chill! Don't worry about it so much." Chandlers hands instinctively moved to Jordan's shoulders, thumbs massaging in an attempt to make the boy feel better. "Its not like worrying will change anyfuckingthing, but itll still be okay. I won't let anything happen to you..." that was a hard promise to make at this point but Chandler was dedicated to keeping Jordan safe.

"You have no control over this." Jordan shook his head but nodded softly. "But you're right. Let's just get it over with." He calmed himself, confident they would be returning to their shitty but quiet life in a few hours. He squeezed Chandler's hand and began the walk to the center of town.

Chandler attempted small talk, but the closer they got to the center, the quieter he became. His fingers were closed tightly around Jordan's hand, tight enough to leave bruises but Chandler never noticed, his heart beating so hard it was all he could hear. The man took a sharp breath as they reached the point where they were to be separated, having to force his fingers not to tremble for Jordan as he pried himself away. He had to be strong, if Jordan noticed him worrying then Jordan would only be more distressed.
"Ill see you at home, padfoot." The man managed a nervous smile, lingering only a moment more before disappearing into the crowd, off to be herded like cattle into his correct place.

Jordan felt empty as Chandler walked away. He allowed his finger to be pricked and for himself to be identified before taking his proper place in the crowd, searching until he caught glimpse of chandler, keeping an eye on the man at all times.

Chandler's head was whipping around, his earth colored eyes scanning the crowd for Jordan. At last his eyes caught sight of the brown mop of hair he was so fond of. The man only managed an assuring smile before the anthem began, still though, his eyes never left Jordan.
The anthem was only three minutes long but Chandler could have sworn they had been there forever by the time a petite women made her way to center stage. She was bathed in pink, clothes, jewelry, her wig. It sent chills down Chandler's spine to see the wide smile splitting the women's face. Taking the microphone in one hand, she cleared her throat and began.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to our third quarter quell! Instead of our normal routine, ladies are out of the drawing this year! That, of course, means we will be drawing two names from our boys cup!" She shuffled over to the one large bowl in the center of the stage.
"Holy fuck..." Chandler was reeling, angry he hadnt seen this coming. He had failed to notice there was only one bowl, too caught up in Jordan, and now that it had been pointed out to him, he felt sick. This meant that Jordan had twice the chance of getting his name pulled. His eyes flickered up, the boys name leaving his lips just as it was read from the first paper out of the bowl.

Jordan did not realize it was his name at first, not until the boy next to him, nudged him gently. He swallowed hard and made his way out of the crowd, painfully aware of everyone's eyes on him. He was terrified, a large lump in his throat as he stepped onto the stage. But at least it wasn't Chandler.

"Wait..." Chandler's mouth was moving but he tripped over every word, his mind scrambling as he tried to grasp the situation. They have called Jordan, they want to take his padfoot out to an arena somewhere and watch as he dies and its all Chandler can do to stay standing as the revelation crashed upon him. They were doomed. If he just volunteered for Jordan the man would never forgive him, and while it would keep him safe now he just...He didnt think Jordan would do well without him, especially if he were to die because of taking the mans place. But what could he still do to protect his tenderfoot?
A second name was read out, one Chandler was unfamiliar with. He watched as the boy shuffled to the isle, knees shaking as he approached the stand. Looking at the fearful boy, it was all Chandler could do to hold himself back, knowing this kid would be trying to kill Jordan soon, unless-
Unless! Chandler let out an alarmed squawk, shoving his way through people to get into the isle. "I volunteer! I'll fucking volunteer in your games!" He could stand beside Jordan, not as an enemy, but as his shield. It was the best he could come up with. "I'll do it." He had already passed the kid whos spot he had taken, his legs quickly carrying him up onto the stage, where he was able to join Jordan. He didnt want to make direct eye contact, didnt want to see Jordan's face as it sunk in-
they were both going into the games,
only one could come out.

Jordan's jaw dropped.
"Chandler!" He hissed over at his lover, not caring that they were in front of the entire district. He had never in a million years really expected Chandler to volunteer. If just one of them was in the games, they had a chance to come back... to get to spend the rest of their lives together. But now, that chance was over. One, if not both of them was going to die in these games.

"No fucking turning back now padfoot, too late." Chandler whispered back, shaking his head. There was no point in arguing, it couldnt be undone now. They were stuck there, together.
"Can I get our tributes to shake hands?" The women nudged Chandler forward, cheerfully waving to the crowd as though it were a celebration. The man offered Jordan his hand, still cold to the touch, still just like Chandler. He looked back to the crowd, lips moving with the women as she delivered her final line.
"Happy hunger games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"

Jordan clasped the man's hand, shaking it gently but he could not even force a smile. He was nearly glaring at his lover as they finished, following the woman off of the stage before shoving Chandler roughly aside.
"What the fuck?" He snapped.

"I promised everything would be okay padfoot, you need to just chill the fuck out and let it be." Chandler's voice was gruff, his upper lip curled in annoyance. "I couldnt let them take you alone, not without someone to watch your back and take care of you, not without me." As Chandler finished the women began ushering them back into the building, ordering that they follow her to the station.
"See?" Chandler whispered harshly, eyes downcast as they walked. " What if I had just sat there? I would never have even gotten a damn goodbye..."

"Yeah, could have been, but do you really think that by yourself you could win against all the careers? I would have watched you die!" Chandler stumbled, a string of curses leaving him as he continued. "And what the fuck would I do then? How could I live with myself?"

Chandler paused, eyes flickering up to Jordan's face. "Tenderfoot..." How was he to say he hadnt come here to die? Thats exactly what he had done, why he had come, to save Jordan's life.
Even at the expense of his own.
"I don't know what going to happen here, but I came to have your back, so you wouldnt be all fucking alone. I love you, asshole. I know you...You feel like I do about this, so im not going to fight about it. Whatever happens, happens."

"And thats all very sweet, but were waiting!" The women had reached the end of the hall, and was currently holding the door for them. A car was waiting outside to transport them to the station.
"I love you too padfoot." Chandler scowled at the women on his way out, sliding into the vehicle and waiting on his lover. They were 12, the last of the districts. All the other tributes were probably already at the capital by now.

Jordan shot a glare at the woman as he slipped into the car beside his lover. He was quite terrified, not only of the games, but of the journey to the Capitol and what would await them when they got there. He wondered about the other tributes, if they would even stand a chance.

"Hey, driver, do you know anything about the other tributes?" Chandler was peering up at the driver of the car, his jaw set as was already working on a game plan. knowledge is power, he wanted to at least know what they were up against.
The drive hummed softly, glancing back at them in the rear view. "A volunteer from 4, a small kid with a bag mouth and bad attitude. Acts like he's already out for blood." His eyes lingered on the pair, wondering if the district 4 boy would kill one of them. "Another from 11, a blind kid. He will probably be the first to go, an easy target." The man sighed mournfully for the unknown boy.
Chandler was taking it all in, trying to imagine these two kids that he would have to fight. "Anymore you remember?"

"Well when you get there, the Reapings are all they'll be playing on TV." The driver continued. "The other kid from 11, he didn't seem too nervous about being picked. Looks nice enough but there was a look in his eyes. Seems a bit off if you ask me. Then there was the usual type from 1. In a suit and tie for his reaping, waving and blowing kisses to the crowd. Real scrawny though. Don't see him lasting as long as the usual careers."
Jordan nodded slowly. So far, they didn't sound too terrible. Maybe one of them had a chance.
"Oh and there was a real big guy from 7. You know they're the lumber district so they're always pretty big but I'd watch out for that one if I were you."

"So, right now we need to watch out for 7 and 11, even if we only know one fucking tribute from them." Chandler was getting anxious, gazing out the window at the vastly changing scenery. "We'll have to decide in training if we want any other allies..."
At the capitol, district 11 had just arrived and the tributes taken to be examined and properly cleaned up, just as all the other tributes that had in the capitol that morning.

Zachariah Torres had groaned softly the entire time as they poked and prodded at him, cleaning every inch of his body. He had refused to let them come anywhere near his dreads though.
Finally they were done now and he found himself in a room with all the other tributes, apart from district 12, who had not yet arrived. He looked towards Danny, the other boy from his district and eyed him up and down. He was blind, he was weak. But Zach was going to protect him, at least for a little while. They were all each other had for now.

Initially Danny had been horrified, of course out of all the well bodied people in 11 they pulled his name, but he had already accepted that on the ride over. He was going to die, probably in less than a week, thats all the boy was giving himself, so why be miserable worrying about it? Danny had decided to simply enjoy the time he had left, eat great food, maybe make some friends before they gunned him down. It was for this reason that he was able to smile, and attempt at striking conversation, it wasnt like he would ever have to kill anyone he befriended, he didnt even see himself making it out of the cornucopia.
"So, uh, Zach is it?" He was looking in the boys general direction, but not quite at his face still, more off to side. "D'ya mind telling me, oh wow, telling me who alls here? I mean....Do they all look unapproachable or?"
